Jessica Fletcher est à San Francisco afin de participer à une convention d'écrivains. Lors d'une soirée à l'opéra, elle est présentée au ténor Rosanno Bertolucci. Connaissant Jessica de réputation, celui-ci lui avoue qu'il va être accusé du meurtre de Lou Faraday mais qu'il est en réalité innocent. Subitement, il est atteint d'une crise cardiaque.
