Suite à la mort de la doyenne des auteurs de romans policiers, Lady Abigail Austin, à l'âge de 101 ans, Jessica Fletcher se souvient d'une énigme. Cette histoire ambiguë, qui s'était déroulée cinquante ans auparavant, n'avait pourtant rien d'une fiction. Elle se passait sur un bateau, le «Queen Mary», amarré dans le port de New-York. Lady Abigail Austin était à bord. Un des passagers, ex-officier de la Gestapo avait été frappé à mort.
