Au lieu de la bande enregistrée habituelle, Briggs reçoit le message suivant sur la carte de visite qu'un photographe lui a remise : "Prison militaire de Lubjanka, quartier général de Dmitri Soska, enquête à démarrer immédiatement, procéder suivant les précédentes instructions et nous tenir au courant, plan alternatif X59..." Comme d'habitude, après avoir pris connaissance du message, Briggs le détruit.
La mission consiste à faire en sorte qu'un dictateur passe pour un traître afin de le destituer. Pour cela, Briggs engage un expert en mémoire, Joseph Baresh, qui endosse le rôle d'un agent ennemi au nom de code "Sparrow".
