Jeremy Kent, un presidiario, explica a los miembros del Tribunal Supremo que hace 18 años el abogado de oficio encargado de su defensa conspiró contra él, por lo que no tuvo un juicio justo. Gracias a su argumentación, Kent, que estudió Derecho durante su encarcelamiento, logra que el tribunal le conceda un nuevo juicio sobre el asesinato de Thomas Harrot en 1991, el primer caso que Catherine investigó en solitario. Acompañada por Nick y Langston, Willows acude a la escena del crimen antes de testificar en el juzgado. Los forenses procesan las pruebas del caso con la tecnología actual descubriendo varias huellas de Jeremy. La investigación da un giro inesperado cuando Catherine y Langston encuentran en el jardín de un inmueble cercano al escenario el arma del crimen: un martillo.
