Μια σειρά από εννέα άγριες δολοφονίες προβληματίζουν τον διοικητή Στότλμάγιερ ο οποίος ζητάει από τον Μονκ να ερευνήσει την υπόθεση. Οι υποψίες του Μονκ επικεντρώνονται αρχικά στο πρόσωπο ενός ασφαλιστή, του Χένρι Σμολς. Λίγες μέρες αργότερα ο Μονκ γίνεται αυτόπτης μάρτυρας της δολοφονίας του Σμολς από έναν άγνωστο. Ο Μονκ κυνηγά τον μυστηριώδη άντρα που φοράει μια μάσκα του σκι αλλά δεν καταφέρνει να τον πιάσει. Παρατηρεί όμως κάτι στη συμπεριφορά του που ελπίζει ότι πολύ γρήγορα θα τον οδηγήσει στα ίχνη του...
