萨伊德发现了一条电缆从森林中伸延下海。他沿着电缆走着走着，他被卢梭设下的陷阱抓住了，而卢梭就是那个发出求救信号的女人。卢梭告诉萨伊德她是一个科学探索队的成员，而他们在十六年前触礁来到岛上。她说岛上有一群原著人并称他们为“其他人”，而她的队友却生了一种奇怪的病死去，最后她说那些其他人在森林中细语。萨伊德逃脱了，带上卢梭的步枪和她在岛上写下的笔记。回去的途中，萨伊德听到了卢梭提到的细语。回到以前，萨伊德被要求拷问一位名为娜蒂娅的罪犯——他的童年好友。他的上司要他处决了她，他却帮助娜蒂娅逃跑。
